« After one of my visits home, I returned with t « After one of my visits home, I returned with these in my suitcase. Which might seem a bit odd. After all, they’re neither expensive nor hard to find, and there are plenty of kitchen shops here.
They don’t qualify as “vintage”, so they’re not likely to make it into one of those over-propped, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink, and let’s-scatter-crumbs-everywhere-while-we’re-about-it, food photos that have been all the rage for a while now. (Because clearly everyone these days cooks exquisitely beautiful food and then sits down to eat it amongst their dirty dishes!)
Here’s why.
I live in another country now. And back in the country where I grew up I have old friends.
The kind of friends you might call in on for an hour and stay for five, while you talk and laugh. A lot.
Where the men talk at each other in their booming man voices in a good-natured manly banter way, until the women realise they have been lip-reading for an hour and laugh while retreating to the kitchen.
And eat great food. Unpretentious, simple, real food. With a glass or three of something.
The kind of friends that I sometimes cried for in the early days, because I hadn’t known anyone in the new country long enough to do that with, and didn’t know if I ever would.
The measuring spoons?
Well, during that trip back to New Zealand those old friends gave them to me. We had been living in a funny little place with no actual kitchen for a year, and I had virtually nothing in the way of kitchenware. Having just moved into a proper house again, I was starting almost from scratch. I don’t actually remember the conversation, I just remember being handed the measuring spoons.
It would have been easy not to bother packing them. But several years later here we still are, and every time I use them I think of my friends.
You don’t always have to be in the same place to enjoy good food with dear friends. »
